Wobble, motors and weight limits
Updated
Every listing says the desk is stable. Owner reviews tell a more mixed story, and the reason is simple. A desk is steadiest when it is low and shakiest at the top of its travel. If you are tall, you will use it right where it is weakest.
Why wobble gets worse as the desk goes up
- The legs are tubes that slide inside each other. The higher the desk, the less the tubes overlap, so there is more play.
- Most budget frames have no crossbar between the legs. That keeps your knees clear but allows side-to-side sway.
- Wobble shows up most when you type hard or lean on the front edge.
Owner summaries back this up. On the VIVO 60 x 30, some owners report no wobble and others notice side-to-side movement. The likely difference is how high each person runs it and what floor it sits on.
What you can do about it
- Buy a desk whose top setting is at least 2 inches above your standing height. Use the calculator to check.
- Retighten every frame bolt after the first week. They settle.
- Level the feet. On carpet, expect more sway than on a hard floor.
- Put the heavy items over the legs, not in the middle of the span or out on the front edge.
Single motor vs dual motor
A single motor desk has one motor and a rod that carries the drive across to the other leg. A dual motor desk has a motor in each leg. Dual motor frames tend to be rated for more weight and handle a loaded top with less strain. They do not fix wobble by themselves, since wobble comes from the legs and the frame.
Most budget listings do not say how many motors they have. Of our picks, only the FLEXISPOT EN1-PRO says dual motor. The VIVO listing says single motor. If a listing says nothing, assume single.
How to read a weight limit
- It is a maker claim. The desks we looked at list from 110 to 225 pounds. We saw no outside test results on any of the listings.
- Ask what it counts. None of the listings we read said if the number includes the desktop itself. To be safe, treat it as the total on the frame.
- It is not a wobble rating. A desk can lift its full load and still sway at the top.
- Add up your own gear. Monitor and computer weights are on their listings. Add the monitor arm, speakers, and the weight of your arms when you lean. Aim to stay well under the limit. The SHW 55 x 28 at 110 pounds leaves the least headroom of our picks.
Cycle test claims
Some listings quote lift cycles, such as 50,000 or 100,000. These are maker claims too. For scale, raising and lowering the desk 4 times a day for 10 years is about 14,600 cycles. The warranty tells you more than a cycle number. Of our picks, only the two VIVO listings state a length in years, which is 3. The HUANUO spec table says lifetime and the SHW table says limited or lifetime, with no terms shown. Read the warranty terms on the listing before you buy.
