Using a standing desk on carpet

Updated

A standing desk works on carpet. Expect more sway than on a hard floor, mostly at standing height, because the feet sit on soft pile and pad. Most of the fix is setup: level the feet, let the desk settle, retighten the bolts, and keep spare height in the legs. Thick, plush carpet is harder than low-pile carpet.

Why carpet adds wobble

A standing desk already sways most at the top of its travel, where the leg tubes overlap the least. Carpet adds a soft layer under the feet. When you type or lean, the feet rock a little in the pile, and that small movement at the floor becomes a bigger movement at the top. The taller you run the desk, the more you notice it. The wobble guide covers the leg side of this.

Setup steps that help

  1. Build it, load it, then wait a few days. The feet press into the pile and pad over time. Level it after it settles, not before.
  2. Level the feet. Put a level on the top, front to back and side to side. Turn the foot levelers until the desk does not rock when you push on a corner.
  3. Retighten every frame bolt after the first week. Bolts settle, and a loose joint feels like carpet wobble.
  4. Measure the height again. Feet that sink half an inch into carpet lower the whole range by half an inch. If you are tall and close to the desk's limit, that matters.
  5. Put the heavy gear over the legs, not out at the front edge.

What to put under the feet

If the desk still rocks, give the feet a firm base. A flat board or a hard floor mat under each foot spreads the load so the feet do not dig in. Make sure it is wide enough that the whole foot sits on it, and that it cannot slide. Anything you add under the feet raises the desk, including its lowest setting, so shorter users should check their sitting fit again.

Skip casters on carpet if you can. Wheels sink in, add height and add sway.

Height math on carpet

You and the desk stand on the same carpet, so your numbers from the calculator do not change. What does change them is an anti-fatigue mat, which lifts you about half an inch or more while the desk stays put. Add the mat to your standing height. Then pick a desk that goes at least 2 inches past that number, so you are not at the top of its travel.

What carpet will not fix

If a desk wobbles on a hard floor at your height, carpet makes it worse, not better. And no desk on carpet will feel like a fixed desk at full height. If you type hard and are tall, buy the most spare travel you can. All seven desks are compared on the best standing desks page.
