L-shaped standing desks: what to check first

An L-shaped standing desk makes sense if you have a free corner and want two work zones, such as screens on one side and paper or a laptop on the other. Check three things before you buy: the height range, how the return side is held up, and how much assembly you are taking on. The one L-shaped desk we list is the VIVO Corner 63 x 55.
1. The height range still comes first
An L shape does not change your body. Get your sitting and standing heights from the calculator and compare them with the listing. The VIVO Corner shows two ranges on one listing. The bullets say 28.5 to 46.8 inches and the spec table says 29 to 48 inches. Going by the bullets, it stands up to about 6 ft 3 in, and its low end is a sitting fit only for someone about 6 ft 4 in or taller. Measure it with a tape inside the return window.
2. Wobble on the return side
The return is the short arm of the L. It hangs off to one side of the main frame, so it has more leverage on the legs than a straight top does. Two habits help. Keep heavy gear on the main side and over the legs. Use the return for light things such as a laptop, a notebook or a printer you rarely touch. 3. Motors and legs that must move together
More legs mean more parts that have to rise at the same speed. The VIVO Corner listing says single motor. Its review summary includes owners who report one side not raising and lowering properly. On any L-shaped desk, run it from bottom to top several times with your gear on it while you can still send it back. Watch the corners of the top. If one corner lags, that is your sign.
4. Assembly and the top
- Multi-part tops. The VIVO top is 3 parts. Seams can catch a mouse, so plan where your mouse hand sits.
- Two people. The listing suggests 2 people for assembly, and owners are split. Some call it easy, others a big job with unclear instructions.
- Which side the return goes on. The VIVO listing calls the shape reversible. Decide the side before you start, because changing it later means taking the top off.
5. Measure both walls
The VIVO Corner's outside size is 63 by 55.2 inches. You need both of those lengths free along the two walls, clear of doors, radiators and window sills as the top rises. Leave a gap to each wall so the top does not scrape on the way up.

The caveats: two different height ranges on the listing, split reports on assembly, and some reports of one side not lifting properly. It is a poor fit if you are over about 6 ft 3 in or under about 5 ft 8 in without a footrest plan.
